He is largely regarded as one of the finest all-around players in the game’s history. He guided the Chicago Bulls to six National Basketball Association ( NBA) titles (1991-1993, 1996-1998).

Early Life

Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born on February 17, 1963, at Cumberland Hospital in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York City,

to James and Deloris Jordan. Deloris was a worker in a bank, while his father James worked in the electrical and heavy equipment industries. The family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, with four children.

Michael was immediately drawn to sports at a young age. His initial love, though, was baseball, not hoops. He used to play catch in the yard with his father, who was a baseball fan. He quickly began to play basketball in order to emulate his older brother, Larry, whom he loved as a child.

As a sophomore at Laney High School, he chose to try out for the varsity squad but was cut because he was raw and undersized.

He received a basketball scholarship to North Carolina University, where he played under famed coach Dean Smith. He was selected ACC Freshman of the Year his freshman year.

Career

Jordan joined the Bulls as the third overall draft pick in 1984 and immediately became a league star, thrilling fans with his prolific scoring while establishing himself as one of the game’s top defensive players. His leaping ability earned him the nicknames “Air Jordan” and “His Airness,” which he proved by performing slam dunks from the free-throw line in Slam Dunk Contests.

In 1991,Michael won his first NBA title with the Bulls, then added another titles in 1992 and 1993 to complete a three-peat. Jordan abruptly retired from basketball prior to the 1993-94 NBA season to play Minor League Baseball, but returned to the Bulls in March 1995, leading them to three more titles in 1996, 1997, and 1998, as well as a then-record 72 regular season wins in the 1995-1996 NBA season. On January 1999 Jordan retired from NBA but came back in the year 2001 to 2003 to Washington wizards as a Member.
