Fred Astaire Early Life

Fred Astaire was born in Omaha Nebraska, United States in 1899 to Mother Johanna (Geilus) and Father Fritz Austerlitz, a brewer.

Fred started the show business when he was 5 years old. He had success in both variety and Broadway with his sister, Adele Astaire. After Adele retired to marry in 1932, Astaire joined Hollywood. Signed to RKO, he was loaned out by MGM to appear in Dancing Lady (1933) before starting work in RKO’s Flying Down to Rio (1933).

Fred Astaire began a very successful collaboration with Ginger Rogers, with whom he danced in 9 RKO shots. During these years he was also active in recording and broadcasting. In the film, Astaire later appeared opposite several partners on different sets. After a temporary retirement in 1945-1947, during which he opened Fred Astaire Dance Studios, Astaire returned to acting to perform in more musicals until 1957.
